How Septic Systems Work: A Guide for Brentwood, TN and Williamson County Homeowners

Learn the two significant parts of your septic system. A septic system consists of a septic tank and a drain field. Poynor Septic Service is here to elaborate on how a septic system works with diagrams. Call us today at (615) 790-8882 to pump your septic system.

Septic Tank

The function of the tank is for natural and bacterial processes to break the waste down. As the waste is broken down, it turns into sludge; if not pumped out regularly, it will build up and wash out into the field area. The outlet baffle (see diagram) is designed to stop the flow of the scum layer (see diagram) into the drain field.

Drain Field

In a proper working system, the only thing entering the field area is flowing water. The soil in the field area treats the water and returns to the earth’s water table. If the sludge is forced into the field area, it will clog the natural soil absorption capability.
